DDS meets funding deadline for self-determination program (SB486)

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) just announced that their Home and Community-Based Services Waiver application seeking federal funding for the Self-Determination Program was submitted to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on December 31, 2014, as scheduled.

What does this mean for you?

It means that the Self-Determination Program has finished its preparatory stage and is now awaiting the funding to proceed to its 3-year initial implementation phase with the proposed limited number of participants (2,500 eligible regional consumers nationwide). In short, it is one step closer to becoming a part of your life.

As the SB486 law is progressing towards its implementation, you can brush up on the Self-Determination Program requirements and how it will change the way you receive services from your regional center by reading the eligibility, covered services, and frequently asked questions sections detailed on this site.

What happens next?

The CMS has 90 days to respond to the application. They can take one of three actions: approve, deny, or request additional information. It is very likely that the CMS will request additional information thereby extending the review period beyond the initial 90 days.
